As the first rains of the season hit Benin City, the residents were in a frenzy. A few drops? No problem. A drizzle? Manageable. But when chunks of ice started plummeting from the sky, people bolted in every direction.
“Jesus is Lord! The gods are angry!” shouted one elderly man, diving under a kiosk.
Efe, a proud Benin boy, stood in the middle of the chaos, shielding his head with a tray meant for roasting corn. “Una dey fear small ice? This na sign say we go get plenty blessing this year!” he announced, ignoring the fact that his teeth were chattering.
Meanwhile, in Uyo, Akwa Ibom, Idongesit scrolled through the news on his phone, shaking his head in disappointment. “Ice block rain? Na wetin dem dey celebrate for Benin?” he muttered.
Turning to his friend, he laughed. “If dem wan see real rain, make dem come Akwa Ibom. Rain no just fall here, e go put you for house arrest. From morning till night, rain dey fall like say angel Gabriel forget tap open!”
His friend nodded in agreement. “For Benin, dem go shout because rain fall for two hours. Here, if rain no reach one week non-stop, we no even count am as ‘rainy season’ yet.”
Back in Benin, Efe was now knee-deep in water, trying to rescue his slippers that had been swept away by floodwater. “E be like say this rain don do,” he admitted reluctantly.
But Idongesit, watching from his dry Akwa Ibom balcony, chuckled. “Make una come experience am here first. You go use canoe go buy garri!”
Moral of the story? Every city thinks their rain is the real rain, but at the end of the day, nobody wants to be caught in the flood. 🌧️😂
